An interesting programme this Saturday December 24 on the French public radio France-Culture. The programme, recorded in October during a conference on trees included an interview with botanist Francis Hallé, about the appearance and development of trees. Apparently, only 22 different ways for a tree to grow have been so far catalogued, and these are totally independent of their botanical genres or evolutionary relations. A second speaker, a computer engineer, explained how you can easily produce images of those trees on screens, thanks to mathematical equations. They both raised the question of how to recognise a tree, either thanks to the Linnean sexual system based on flowers and fruits, or thanks to the overall appearance of the tree. They also talked about different artists' rendering of trees, and compared their images to scientific images. The link to the programme, available for a month, is to the left.

L'émission Terre à terre, enregistrée en octobre à Brive lors d'un colloque sur les arbres, interviewait Francis Hallé, botaniste, qui parlait du port des arbres. Il apparaît que 22 types de développement des arbres ont été repérés, qui sont indépendants de leurs genres ou parentés lors de l'évolution. Un second intervenant, ingénieur en informatique, a expliqué comment aisément modéliser ces arbres pour produire des images sur ordinateurs, grâce à des équations mathématiques. Ils ont soulevé le problème de la reconnaissance des arbres, selon le système sexuel de Linné ou par rapport à leur apparance, et parlé également de la façon dont les images des artistes diffèrent des représentations savantes.
