HERBARIA AND LOCAL SCHOLARS/DES HERBIERS ET DES ERUDITS LOCAUX

Last week-end was heritage week-end in Europe, an event that was created in France in 1984. In the village of Losne, Burgundy, local historian Alain Cessot, who has studied extensively the history of his local village, displayed samples from his herbaria. The plants, as you can see from these photos, are very well-preserved. He also showed the press he uses, and the collecting box for his specimens. I was intrigued by the design of the press, which has a heavy iron lock, which adapts to the thickness of papers and plants within.

Le week-end dernier, c'était les journées européennes du patrimoine, une manifestation créée en France en 1984. A Losne, Côte d'or, Alain Cessot qui est un historien local qui a étudié par le menu l'histoire de sa commune, exposait certains de ces herbiers. Les plantes, comme on peut le voir sur ces photos, sont très bien préservées. Il montrait aussi sa presse, et la boîte à collecter les spécimens. La presse est très inhabituelle, avec son système de fermeture à plusieurs niveaux, suivant le nombre de plantes et de papiers à l'intérieur. 

This small exhibition reminded me of the work of local naturalists in past centuries, how important their work was for scientific progress. I find it touching that people would still find it worthwhile to walk around their village and collect the plants to preserve them in beautiful herbaria. Who knows? They might find something that has escaped notice, or more likely an invasive plant...

Cette petite exposition m'a fait penser au travail des naturalistes locaux dans les siècles passés, combien il avait été important pour le progrès scientifique. Je trouve assez touchant que certaines personnes perpétuent cette tradition et aillent cueillir des plantes autour de leur village pour en faire de beaux herbiers. Qui sait? Ils trouveront peut-être quelque chose d'exceptionnel, ou plus sûrement, une plante exotique invasive...

TERRAE GENESIS

This week-end, I visited the Terrae Genesis Centre, a geology gallery dedicated to minerals, mining, fossils and the history of the earth, in the Vosges, the mountain range in the east of France, close to Alsace. The area was famous for mining in the Middle-Ages (silver) and also later for granite and other igneous rocks. The Centre has unmatched collections of hundreds of rock formations, and loads of samples of precious stones, and an intriguing feature - the dark light room, where minerals are bathed in ultra-violet light and show off eery colours. Here are some examples of the displays:

Ce week-end, j'ai visité le centre Terrae Genesis, un musée de géologie dédié aux minéraux, au travail de la mine, aux fossiles et à l'histoire de la terre, dans les Vosges. La région a une forte tradition minière depuis le Moyen-Age (pour l'argent) et aussi plus tard pour le granit et autres roches métamorphiques. Le Centre a des collections uniques de centaines de roches, et aussi de nombreux échantillons de pierres précieuses, et un lieu surprenant - la salle de lumière noire, où les minéraux baignés dans de la lumière ultra-violette émettent des couleurs surnaturelles. The Centre is run by an association of local volunteers who also provide companies and institutions with thin microscopic views of rock formations - like this one, taken from their site:

We were lucky enough to meet its president, Jean-Paul Gremillet, who showed us how to make these sections and allowed us to look at them through the microscope (they are 30 microns, ie thirty millionths of a metre).

Nous avons eu la chance de rencontrer son président, Jean-Paul Gremillet, qui nous a expliqué la procédure pour couper ces lames, et nous en a montrées certaines au microscope (elles font 30 microns, soit 30 millionièmes de mètre).
