MATHEMATICAL OBJECTS/OBJETS MATHEMATIQUES

On Monday, I visited a very small but fascinating exhibition in the Science Library on the Campus in Dijon. They have on display some mathematical models dating back to the nineteenth century, orginally bought by the University of Franche-Comté. These bizarre objects are spacial representations of mathematical equations, and they have a surrealistic look that persuaded Man Ray to use some of them in his works. It turns out that these models were mostly made by German manufacturers, and quite a range of universities have collections of those.

Lundi dernier, j'ai visité une exposition, petite mais très intéressante à la Biblitohèque de Sciences sur le Campus de Dijon. Ils exposaient quelques maquettes et modèles mathématiques datant du dix-neuvième siècle, et propriété de l'Université de Franche-Comté. Ces drôles d'objets sont des représentations dans l'espace d'équations mathématiques, et ils ont un petit air surréaliste qui a convaincu Man Ray d'en utiliser certains  dans ses oeuvres. Il se trouve que ces modèles étaient surtout fabriqués en Allemagne, et un certain nombre d'universités en possèdent des collections.

These objects were the focus of an exhibition in the Musée du Temps in Besançon last year (see here for an article and photos). A pity I missed it.

These models were used for teaching purposes at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, but were soon discarded. They remain on shelves or in boxes in mathematical departements all over the world, and have a kind of nostalgic appeal as well as being three-dimensional representations of abstract calculations. They raise the question of how mathematics really represents the world, and creates structures that strike us as unnatural.

Ces modèles ont été utilisés à des fins pédagogiques à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle et au tournant qu vingtième siècle, puis ont été assez vite abandonnés. Ils restent sur des étagères ou dans des boîtes dans les départements de mathématiques partout dans le monde, et ils ont un attrait nostalgique tout en étant la représentation en trois dimensions de calculs abstraits. Ils posent la question de la façon dont les mathématiques représentent le monde, et créent des structures qui à nos yeux semblent non-naturelles.
