SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION ON FRANCE CULTURE/ILLUSTRATION SCIENTIFIQUE A FRANCE CULTURE

Yesterday, France Culture's scientific programme, La Méthode scientifique, devoted an hour to scientific illustration. Valérie Chansigaud was one of the guests, along with Bernard Darras from Paris I and a scientific illustrator, Christophe Martin. His website is so interesting that I have added it to my selection of links on the left : it has a number of his illustrations and also shows his talent in 3D animation, etc. Particularly interesting was the report from the design school Ecole Estienne with two students training in scientific illustration. The programme addressed the historical development of scientific illustration, its contemporary role as compared to photography or film, and the lines dividing artists' views from the more technical aspects required for accuracy, both in popularising science and helping scientists shape their own knowledge. A very useful programme, clearly constructed, with the testimony of an illustrator able to convey what it is like to work with scientists and make decisions about the right image to produce. Here is the link to the podcast(in French of course) with a selection of images.
