INAUGURAL LECTURE - FRIDAY NOVEMBER 25 2011

For our inaugural lecture, we welcomed Valérie Chansigaud, the author of several books for publishers Delachaux et Niestlé, among which a History of naturalist illustrations. She gave a talk on five centuries of illustrations in natural history, from the beginnings of printing to the impact of photography.
She raised the different issues we are going to have to deal with in the seminar : what is the specificity of scientific illustration, how far technical advances and prevailing ideology can influence them. In the afternoon we inaugurated the exhibition organised by the University's Mission Culture Scientifique in the main Library, which enables the visitor to see some of the wonderful posters and 3-D models used in teaching in the biology department, as well as some rare books from the Library's fund.
