VESTIGES OF THE NATURAL HISTORY OF CREATION/LES VESTIGES DE L'HISTOIRE NATURELLE DE LA CREATION

In 1844, Robert Chambers, a Scottish journalist (1802-1871) published anonymously the book entitled Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation. I am reading it at the moment. Though it is a book which had some influence in making Victorians aware of the possibility of transmutation in animal and plant species - and so is considered as having paved the way for Darwin, who actually mentions Vestiges in Origin of Species -  it is a curious assemblage of deep, interesting thoughts (very striking remarks about how carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere would profoundly modify the climate, and lead to large-scale extinction) and prejudices (about the blacks and the Irish, notably). The book was highly successful, and the tenth edition was abundantly illustrated. Unfortunately, the edition I have has just a couple of graphs, including this one, which is supposed to show how fish, reptiles, birds and mammals are connected. Chambers is a great defender of the idea that embryos undergo the different stages of development of the entire scale of being. Thus, every animal embryo goes through A and diverges towards F it is to be a Fish, or moves on to C if it's going to be a reptile, or even D if it's to be a bird, and so on. Another way of representing time through space, of course. I don't think it was ever translated into French, I wonder why.

En 1844, le journaliste écossais Robert Chambers (1802-1871) publia de manière anonyme son livre intitulé Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation. Je suis en train de le lire en ce moment. Ce livre a eu une certaine influence sur la pensée victorienne, en vulgarisant l'idée de transmutation des espèces animales et végétales - ce qui a fait qu'on a considéré qu'il avait ouvert la voie aux idées de Darwin, qui en parle d'ailleurs dans l'Origine des espèces -, mais c'est un curieux assemblage de remarques profondes et intéressantes (des réflexions frappantes sur la façon dont le gaz carbonique émis dans l'atmosphère modifierait profondément le climat et mènerait à des extinctions massives) et de préjugés (notamment sur les noirs et les Irlandais). L'ouvrage connut un grand succès et sa dixième édition contenait nombre de gravures. Malheureusement, l'édition que j'ai n'a que quelques diagrammes, dont celui-ci, qui est censé nous montrer les liens entre les poissons, les reptiles, les oiseaux et les mammifères sur l'échelle du vivant. Chambers est un ardent défenseur de l'idée que les embryons passent par toutes les étapes de développement de la chaîne des êtres. Ainsi, l'embryon de tous les animaux passe par l'étape A, avant de diverger vers F si c'est un poisson, et poursuit son chemin jusqu'à C si c'est un reptile, ou même D si c'est un oiseau, etc. Une autre façon de représenter le temps par de l'espace, bien sûr. A ma connaissance, ce livre n'a jamais été traduit en français, je me demande pourquoi.
